Beasts of Burden: Animal Rites

29th November 2013

"Beasts of Burden: Animal Rites"
By: Evan Dorkin & Jill Thompson

This is a collection of the first comics, up to 2010, of the Beasts of Burden series. The very first story is a stand alone, while the rest of the stories do tell one story each, they are increasingly part of a larger series with the very last story finishing on a cliff hanger and an obvious set up for the next comic(s).

The series follows a group of dogs and at first one cat, as they investigate and then deal with a series of supernatural events – starting with the haunted dog house of one of the dogs in the very first story. It is very well done, especially the art work, and is essentially an unusual take on the horror comic genre.

My only real complainant is that Beasts of Burden is not a regular comic – the 8 stories in this book where published between 2003 and 2010 – meaning that the ongoing story line that has started to develop in the shorter stories is going to take a while to finish... :( There have been additional comics published between 2010 and now of course, but they have yet to bring out a second book collecting them together...
